One in three Americans say they plan to use this year’s tax refund on a vacation, according to a new survey from Travelzoo.
Coming in a close second, 32 percent of respondents to the survey said they planned to save their refund while 31 percent said they planned to pay off debt. Buying a home, going on a clothing shopping spree and buying gifts for their children also registered votes.
The survey of 5,811 adults revealed 78 percent of Americans expect to receive a refund this year. At the same time, one in five (21 percent) are expecting a larger refund from a year ago, the survey revealed.
“Despite the sting of paying taxes, we can at least thank Uncle Sam for sending rebate checks during a great time to find travel deals,” Gabe Saglie, senior editor for Travelzoo, said in a news release.“Between the end of tax season and the beginning of summer, we see enormous discounts available. In fact due to the strong dollar, this year’s average tax refund is enough for a weeklong trip to Asia or Europe.”
Meanwhile, a new survey from FatWallet.com revealed 81 percent of people regularly take a vacation. The survey found 58 percent go every year while 25 percent take two two or more vacations per year.
Most people (60 percent) book their vacation between one and six months ahead, according to the survey. And, 58 percent said they plan on spending less than $1,500 on a vacation, up from 54 percent in 2014.
