2014 a record-setting year for Orlando

Last year was a hallmark year for tourism in Orlando, which saw a record number of visitors to the area.

More than 62 million people visited the Central Florida haven in 2014, representing a five percent increase from a year earlier. The record 32 million room nights sold in Orlando in 2014 brought in more than $200 million in bed tax collections, the first time Orange County, Fla., has eclipsed the $200 million mark.

“The impact of tourism on our community is remarkable, and in fact, the travel and tourism industry is the largest generator of jobs and economic impact for our region,” Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs said in a news release. “In addition to delighting visitors and families from around the world, our travel and hospitality industry helps to support a great quality of life for Orlando’s residents, including our amazing new performing arts center and outstanding sports venues.”

Last year was a big year for some of the area’s biggest attractions. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley opened at Universal Orlando Resort and Walt Disney World Resort completed its Fantasyland expansion.

“Passing the 60 million annual visitors mark is a significant achievement for Orlando and the U.S. travel industry that generates $2.1 trillion for the U.S. economy each year,” U.S. Travel Association President and CEO Roger Dow said in a news release. “Thanks to the close partnership among members of Orlando’s tourism community and strong leadership by public officials and Visit Orlando, this popular destination known around the world is well positioned to continue setting records in tourism.”

Orlando eclipsed New York, which saw 56.4 million visitors last year, according to The Associated Press. However, the BIg Apple saw more international visitors with 12.2 million, about twice as many as Orlando, the news wire reported.
