Former farm revived as north Georgia winery

ELLIJAY, Ga. — Situated in the heart of Georgia’s famed apple country, Cartecay Vineyards has brought new glory to a former farm.

The land, originally a working farm dating to about 1890, was purchased in 2007. The winery’s grapes are grown on land that once grew corn and hay; the farm also was home to cattle, hogs and mules.

The vineyard, which opened in 2011, incorporates much of the original farm’s layout. The winery derives its name from a Cherokee word meaning “Bread Valley.”
