HARTWELL, Ga. — The Hart County Courthouse is among the more modern additions to the roster of courthouses in the state of Georgia.

Built in 1971, the courthouse replaced the 1902 courthouse that was destroyed by fire in 1967. The 1902 courthouse, the county’s third, replaced a building that stood from 1856 until about 1900. The first Hart County Courthouse was a wooden structure erected in 1854.

Here’s a quick overview of the memorials on the courthouse’s grounds:

  • Veterans of Foreign Wars Monument: The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Ladies Auxiliary Post 8076 dedicated this monument
  • Civil War Memorial: The Hartwell Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy dedicated this monument (topped by a Confederate soldier holding a rifle) on July 23, 1908
  • World War I Memorial: The Hartwell Federated Woman’s Club dedicated a bronze memorial and a row of oak trees in 1922
  • World War II and Korean War Memorial: American Legion Post 109 dedicated this memorial on Veterans Day (Nov. 11) in 1990,
  • Vietnam Memorial: “The Broken V” was dedicated on Nov. 15, 1987, in honor of the six Hart County residents who died during the war.

Interestingly, the county, named for Nancy Hart, a heroine of the Revolutionary War, is the only county in Georgia to be named for a woman. A monument to Hart is located elsewhere in town.
