Five worthy destinations for the fall

With the fall travel season under way, there’s no time like the present to head out of Dodge (proverbially speaking) and check out any number of Southeastern destinations.

Here are five worthy destinations to check out this fall:

Savannah, Ga.: From live oak trees to historic squares to River Street, Savannah is quintessential southern charm at its finest. St. Patrick’s Day may not be in the fall, but Savannah is always worth the visit.

Jacksonville, Fla.: “The Duval County region has many outstanding assets, including the beaches, arts, golf, the Gator Bowl, high-profile entertainment, the nation’s largest urban park system, a diverse set of attractions, the city’s special events, and, of course, the Jacksonville Jaguars,” Daniel O’Byrne said in a news release announcing his naming as the new president and CEO for Visit Jacksonville.

Nashville, Tenn.: Music City U.S.A. is perhaps best defined by its role in the country music industry, but it’s also home to a number of historic sites, cultural attractions and professional sports teams — to name a few of the city’s draws.

Lexington, Ky.: It’s both “The Horse Capital of the World” and “The Birthplace of Bourbon” — and there are enough associated attractions to keep travelers busy — from Keeneland Race Course to the Kentucky Horse Park to historic distilleries.

Marietta, Ga.: The Gem City of the South is steeped in history. Located about 20 miles north of Atlanta, the city is one of Metro Atlanta’s largest suburbs. Like so many other North Georgia cities, Marietta unwillingly played host to William T. Sherman during 1864. But that only helped to shape the city into what it is today.
