Athens, Ga., a ‘Distinctive Destination’

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has designated Athens, Ga., one of its Dozen Distinctive Destinations for 2009.

“The vibrant city of Athens, Georgia, is known for its distinct blend of traditional heritage and trend-setting southern culture, a mix of historic attractions, a dynamic downtown and a lively music scene,” the Trust said on its Web site. “Athens, called the ‘classic city’ because of its name and neo-classical architecture, is home to the University of Georgia and a growing artistic community.”

Located about 60 miles northeast of Atlanta, Athens is home to the University of Georgia, but it also features a wealth of attractions, culture and history.

“The evolution of the Athens community from a sleepy college town to a vibrant urban center is remarkable,” Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, said in a news release posted on the Athens CVB’s Web site. “By reclaiming its streets and neighborhoods, the city has been reinvigorated and now nurtures a dynamic blend of art, music and history that’s not to be missed.”

Every year, the National Trust for Historic Preservation picks communities “that offer cultural and recreational experiences different from the typical vacation destination,” the organization said. The group has been picking the cities since 2000. This year’s complete list includes:

  • Athens, Ga.
  • Bristol, R.I.
  • Buffalo, N.Y.
  • Fort Worth, Texas
  • Franklin, Tenn.
  • Hot Springs, S.D.
  • Lake Geneva, Wisc.
  • Lititz, Pa.
  • Santa Barbara, Calif.
  • Santa Fe, N.M.
  • Saugatuck-Douglas, Mich.
  • Virginia City, Nev.
